Leader's History

1950
Construction of the offices, warehouse, and loading facility on the corner of 5th and Mineral is completed. This location would eventually become the 935 S. 5th Street address. At this time, Robert's son Ralph became Vice President.

1954
In January of 1954, the founder of Leader, Gustave Wilke, died.

1955
A company board meeting determines that in order to keep the prices of Leader's products competitive and to preserve product quality, the company would have to produce its own envelopes. An expansion plan called for remodeling the basement and purchasing additional machinery, for a total cost of $60,000. The following year the expansion was completed, and Leader entered the envelope converting business.

1959
Leader began racing its own car at the Indy 500. Rodger Ward took first place for Leader.

1960
Construction of a new building at 925-929 South 5th Street is completed, which is currently the location of the envelope die-cutting department and company offices.

1962
Leader took first and second at Indy with drivers Rodger Ward and Len Sutton.

1968
Leader took first with Bobby Unser driving -- his first Indy win.
